Frequently asked questions

everything you might be wondering

A few of the questions I'm often asked. If yours isn't here, just get in touch — I'm always happy to help.

What is a Humanist celebrant?

A Humanist celebrant creates and leads non-religious ceremonies that are built entirely around you — your story, your words and the things that matter to you. There's no set script and no fixed form to follow, so every ceremony is completely personal.

Is a Humanist wedding legally binding in Scotland?

Scotland is one of the few places where Humanist and belief-based marriage ceremonies can be legally recognised — unlike in England and Wales, where a separate civil ceremony is required. I'll happily talk you through exactly how the legal side works for your ceremony and make sure everything is properly in place for your day.

Do you only conduct non-religious ceremonies?

My ceremonies are Humanist in spirit — warm, personal and centred on you rather than on religion. If there are readings, songs or moments of reflection that hold meaning for you, we can absolutely include them. It's your ceremony, and it should feel like you.

How far will you travel?

Anywhere in Scotland. I'm based in Scotland and very happy to travel across the country — from cities to the coast and the countryside — to conduct your ceremony.

Can we write our own vows and choose our own words?

Absolutely — and I'd encourage it. I'll guide you every step of the way, help shape your words, and weave in your story, your readings and any personal touches or symbolic moments you'd like. Nothing is off-the-shelf.

How far in advance should we book?

The sooner the better, especially for popular dates in spring and summer — some couples book a year or more ahead. That said, I'll always do my best to help at shorter notice, and for funerals I understand things move quickly and I'm glad to help without delay.

How much does it cost?

Every ceremony is bespoke, so the cost depends on the occasion and what's involved. Get in touch and I'll give you a clear, no-obligation quote — the first conversation is always free.

What happens after I get in touch?

We'll arrange a relaxed, no-pressure chat — over the phone or a cup of tea — so I can understand what you have in mind. From there I'll write your ceremony from scratch, share it with you to shape together, and lead the day with warmth and calm. Start with a quick message here.

Still have a question?

I'd love to hear from you — there's never any obligation.
